ORONO, Maine - Paced by career high totals in points, rebounds and assists from freshman swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), the Marist men's basketball team earned a 77-71 victory at Maine in a Sears BracketBusters contest on Saturday at Memorial Gym. With the win, Marist has now won four of its last five.
Lewis finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He shot 10-for-16 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. He was one of four Red Foxes to score in double digits, as he was joined by junior guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) with 16, freshman point guard Isaiah Morton (Richland, N.J.) with 10 and freshman swingman Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 10 as well. Thomas tied his career highs with six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) added eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
The lead changed hands five times in the first 7:08 of the contest, but a jumper by Lewis at the 12:52 mark of the first half gave the Red Foxes the lead for good. The basket also started Marist on an 11-2 run, as the Red Foxes jumped out to an eight-point lead. After Maine's Gerald McLemore cut the Red Foxes' lead to 27-25 on three-pointer with 4:31 left until halftime, the Red Foxes closed the half on a 12-2 run to take a 39-27 lead to the locker room. Lewis had 16 points in the first half on 7-for-11 shooting.
Marist ran its lead to as much as 16 early in the second half before Maine chipped away at it. The Red Foxes' lead was cut to two when Lewis drained a three-pointer with 5:51 to play. Marist then closed the game out by hitting six of its eight free-throw attempts over the final 1:07.
Marist shot over 50 percent in both halves and finished at .518 (29-for-56) from the field for the game. The Red Foxes also shot .533 (8-for-15) from three-point range. Maine shot just .397 (25-for-63) from the field.
Maine (11-15) also had four scorers in double digits, led by Gerald McLemore with 20. Mike Allison had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 12 points.
This was the final road game of the regular season for Marist (11-16), which returns home to McCann Arena for its final three games. The Red Foxes will host Fairfield in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest on Monday at 7 p.m. The game is being made up from its originally scheduled date on Jan. 22, and tickets from that day will be honored at Monday's contest.
Notes: Marist is now 4-3 all-time in BracketBusters contests, with this being the Red Foxes' first road win in four tries. ... Marist is now 3-1 all-time against Maine.
