RIVERDALE N.Y. - Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J) registered a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, but the Marist women's basketball team could not overcome a 24% shooting effort as they fell at Manhattan 48-44 Saturday in the National MAAC Game of the Week which was broadcast live on ESPN3.
Danella was the only player in double figures for Marist, making seven of her 10 shots from the field and going 5-5 from the free throw line. Corielle Yarde (Reading, Pa.) finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The Red Foxes were 14-58 from the floor, and only 6-32 from three-point range.
The offense started slow right from the start for Marist (15-7, 10-1 MAAC) as nine of their first ten shots were from behind the three-point arc, and they only connected on two, both by Danella.
Overall, Danella scored 10 of Marist's first 12 points, as the Red Foxes held a 12-10 lead midway through the first half.
Manhattan (12-11, 6-5 MAAC) hung right in there, never falling behind by more than three points in the second half, and leading by as many as five. They took a 19-14 lead with 7:16 left in the first half, but Marist quickly erased that on a jumper by Danella and three pointers by Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Natalie Gomez (Andover, Mass.) to give the Red Foxes a 22-21 lead with 4:39 remaining.
Yarde scored Marist the final five points of the half for the Red Foxes, on a three-pointer off of a Gomez feed and a layup, to send Marist into halftime with a slim advantage at 27-25.
Danella led all scorers with 12 points at halftime. Yarde had five points and five rebounds. The Red Foxes were 10-33 from the floor, but just 5-20 from three-point range.
Marist came out in the second half with strong defense, holding the Jaspers without a point for the first five and a half minutes, while building a seven-point lead on a Yarde trey and two free throws by Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio).
They still held the lead at 44-40 with 3:27 left, after Ockenden hit one of two from the free throw line, but Marist could not put any points on the board the rest of the way as the Jaspers scored the final eight points.
After Manhattan missed the front end of a one-and-one with 13 seconds left and the Jaspers leading by two at 46-40, Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) drove the length of the floor, but could not get a friendly roll on the layup. Manhattan hit two more free throws to seal it.
The Red Foxes will return to McCann Arena for the first of three straight home games on Monday versus Saint Peter's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Marist will also host Fairfield on Friday, in what is the Red Foxes' "Pack the House" game, and Siena on Sunday, in their Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game.
