Team Effort Leads Marist Baseball Over Radford

RADFORD, Va. - Red-shirt senior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) tossed a complete game as the Marist baseball team cruised to a 9-2 win at Radford on Friday night. Marist racked up 14 hits in the contest, as six Red Foxes enjoyed multi-hit games.

Gallagher tossed a six-hitter as he walked just one while striking out three. He threw an economical 98 pitches, 68 of which were strikes as he improved to 2-2 on the season. The only two Radford runs came on solo homers by shortstop Jeff Kemp and first baseman Matt Mack. Other than the home runs, no Radford runner reached second base in the entire game. Gallagher retired seven straight at one point, and nine straight at another.

Freshman second baseman Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.), junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.), junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), sophomore third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.), red-shirt junior designated hitter Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) and red-shirt sophomore center fielder Mark Stuckey (Marietta, Pa.) all had two hits apiece. Both of Luderer's hits went for extra bases, as he had a double and triple. Shank and Orefice scored two runs apiece, and McQuail drove in two.

After scoring single runs in the first and second innings, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 5-1 lead with a three-run third in which they sent eight hitters to the plate. Marist added a single run in the eighth and three more in the ninth to pull away.

Keith Fritz, who started and went the first two innings for Radford, took the loss to fall to 2-2.

Marist improved to 4-7; Radford fell to 8-10. The teams will play the second of their three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) will get the start for Marist, and Radford's scheduled starter is right-hander Tyler Costello.
