TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Marist women's basketball team's run came to a heartbreaking end Tuesday night, as they fell to fifth-seeded St. Bonaventure 66-63, in a NCAA Tournament Second Round game.
Marist (26-8) had the final possession after St. Bonaventure (31-3) missed the front end of a one-and-one from the free throw line with 10 seconds left, but a deep three-pointer by Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) missed to the right as time expired.
Brandy Gang (Hartville, Ohio) scored a team-high 19 points. Corielle Yarde (Reading, Pa.) had 13 points and four assists. Kelsey Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) was also in double figures, scoring all of her 12 points in the second half, and also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) finished with seven points and Ockenden added six.
Both teams come out fast at the start, matching each other with nearly every bucket. A three-point play by Dulin and the second three-pointer by Yarde gave Marist a brief 16-15 lead with 12:23 left.
St. Bonaventure responded with a 12-2 run however over nearly a five minute span to take a 27-18 lead as Dulin and Beynnon each had to go to the bench early with foul trouble.
Still trailing by 10 at 33-23 with 5:42 left in the opening half, the Red Foxes went on an 8-0 run to climb back into the game. Ockenden scored all six of her points in the streak on a free throw, a three-pointer and a layup off of a feed from Yarde. Out of the last media timeout of the half, Gang and Ockenden hit quick back-to-back layups to force a Bonnies timeout with Marist only down by two, 33-31, with 2:28 left.
The Bonnies scored the final five points of the half to take a 38-33 lead into halftime.
Yarde led the Red Foxes at the half with 11 points. Ockenden had six, Gang and Dulin each had 5 points.
The Red Foxes opened the second half on a tear, scoring 12 of the first 16 points to take a 43-42 lead five minutes into the period. Gang started and ended the streak with three-pointers and also added a layup. Beynnon made a layup and also added a pair of free throws.
The teams went back and forth until St. Bonaventure scored five straight to jump back ahead 54-49 with 8:39 remaining.
Marist pulled within one at 64-63 on back-to-back baskets by Beynnon with 1:25 left, but could not get possession back for over a minute as St. Bonaventure grabbed two offensive rebounds before the Red Foxes were forced to foul.
The Red Foxes close their season at 26-8, their sixth consecutive season with at least 25 wins.
