White Defeats Red In Marist Football Spring Game, 27-10

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Led by a strong defensive effort and two long third quarter touchdowns, the Red Team defeated the White Team by a score of 27-10 in the Marist football team's annual Spring Game, held at Tenney Stadium on Friday night.

White opened the scoring late in the first quarter on a 24-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Jesse Signa (South Huntington, N.Y.). After a second quarter fumble recovery by freshman safety Zach Adler (Walden, N.Y.)  deep in Red territory, freshman running back Louis Cotrone (South Bellmore, N.Y.) scored on a six-yard run. Signa's extra point gave White a 10-0 halftime lead.

The White team then put the game away with a pair of long touchdowns in the third quarter. Junior quarterback Anthony Varrichione (Medway, Mass.) completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who made one defender miss and then cut across the field for a 64-yard touchdown. Signa's extra point put White up 17-0. Then, freshman running back Max Jacques (Salem, N.H.) burst through the middle untouched for a 75-yard touchdown run. The extra point by freshman kicker Ryan Card (Manchester, N.H.) gave White a 24-0 advantage.

Red got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when junior kicker Jason Myers (Chula Vista, Calif.) drilled a 31-yard field goal, as White led 24-3 through three quarters. White scored its final points early in the fourth on a 38-yard field goal by Signa, and Red closed out the scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Travis Lock (Lynbrook, N.Y.), with Card hitting the ensuing extra point.

Freshman safety Connor Mathias (West Lawn, Pa.) and sophomore cornerback Jack Marston (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had interceptions in the game.

The Marist football team will open its 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Bryant. The Red Foxes will open their five-game home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 8 against Bucknell.
