Marist Baseball Sweeps Non-Conference Doubleheader From Binghamton

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Binghamton at McCann Baseball Field on Tuesday. In a pair of games scheduled for seven innings, the Red Foxes took game one 7-4, and won the second game 4-3 in eight innings.

In game one, after spotting Binghamton a run in the top of the first, Marist answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore center fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) reached on an infield single to bring home the first run, and an errant infield throw on the play gave the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead. Sophomore right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) followed with a two-run double, and red-shirt junior catcher Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) added an RBI single as the Red Foxes banged out seven hits in the frame and sent 10 men to the plate.

Marist added another run in the second as junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a groundout by junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), and scored on another double by senior left fielder Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.).

A three-run Binghamton fourth made the score 6-4, but Marist made it 7-4 in the bottom half of the inning when Orefice led off with a single, and then came into score on a sacrifice fly by Berry.

Binghamton loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, by sophomore right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) pitched out of the jam by inducing an infield pop out and a groundout to end the game.

Marist outhit Binghamton 12-6 in game one. Helmrich led the way by going 3-for-3, while Shank, Orefice and Berry all had two hits apiece. For Binghamton, catcher Jake Thomas and left fielder Dave Ciocchi each had two hits.

Freshman right-hander Brandon Dolan (Franklin Park, N.J.) earned his fourth win of the season by going the first four innings. Freshman righty Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) followed with two scoreless innings, and McCarthy recorded three outs in the seventh for his first save of the year.

In game two, Ciocchi's two-run homer over the wall in right-center gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead in the first. However, Marist tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run single by freshman second baseman Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.). Binghamton third baseman Brian Ruby had a two-out RBI single in the fifth to give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead, but Marist tied the game on a two-out RBI single by sophomore third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) in the bottom half of the inning.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Berry worked a one-out walk. Freshman designated hitter Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) then hit a ground ball to second which led to Berry being retired on a force, but an errant throw to first allowed Swertfager to reach second. Welsh followed with a ground ball single through the middle, which brought home Swertfager from second with the winning run.

Sophomore lefty Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win by pitching three scoreless innings, and allowing just one hit. He also had a strikeout. Alex Adami, who went the final 1.2 innings, took the loss for Binghamton.

Binghamton outhit Marist 8-6 in game two, with Ruby and shortstop Jordon Smucker leading the way with two hits apiece.

Marist improved to 13-19; Binghamton is now 13-16. The Red Foxes return to action this weekend, when they travel to Rider for a three-game conference series. It will start with a Saturday doubleheader, with first pitch of game one slated for noon.
