Marist Football Cruises To 35-10 Win At Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Marist football team used a balanced team effort to earn a 35-10 win at Bryant of the Northeast Conference in a non-league contest on Saturday.

Offensively, the Red Foxes amassed 419 yards of total offense (241 rushing, 178 passing), had zero turnovers, went 10-for-15 on third-down conversions, and scored touchdowns on all five trips inside the red zone. Defensively, the Red Foxes held the Bulldogs to 295 yards of total offense, and limited star running back Jordan Brown to just 43 yards on 22 carries.

Junior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) went 15-for-22 passing for 178 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns. He also ran for 92 yards on 10 carries, including a 26-yard scamper. Marist finished with two 90-plus yard rushers, as fifth-year senior running back Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) ran for a team-high 94 yards on 13 carries. Junior wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led Marist with five receptions, and sophomore wide receiver Matt Tralli (Croton, N.Y.) had a team-best 96 receiving yards on four receptions.

Defensively, junior cornerback Jack Marston (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had a team-high six tackles. Sophomore linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) registered five stops, and also blocked a first-quarter field goal with the scored tied at zero.

The Red Foxes opened the scoring on an 11-yard run by McCoy with 1:54 left in the first quarter. After Bryant's Dom Kozlowski drilled a 48-yard field goal with 9:08 left in the second quarter, Marist ran its lead to 21-3 at halftime on the strength of two-five yard touchdown passes from Looney to tight ends - first to junior David Diomede (Park Ridge, N.J.) and second to senior Anthony Calcagni (Thornwood, N.Y.) Marist jumped out to a 35-3 advantage in the third on touchdown runs by sophomores Emmanuel Onakoya (Waldorf, Md.) and Louis Cotrone (South Bellmore, N.Y.).

Marist won its second straight season opener, and improved its all-time record against Bryant to 2-0.

The Red Foxes will have their home opener next week, as they will host Bucknell of the Patriot League on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports, and a fireworks show presented by Legion Fireworks will come after the game.
