Marist Football Suffers 26-14 Defeat At Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville scored the game's final 16 points over a 10-minute span to record a 26-14 victory over Marist in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest on Saturday at D.B. Milne Field.

The Red Foxes received a pair of rushing touchdowns. Fifth-year senior Calvin McCoy (Bronx, N.Y.) had a 10-yard run to account for the first points of the game late in the first quarter, and a two-yard run by sophomore Emmanuel Onakoya (Waldorf, Md.) enabled Marist to take a 14-10 lead in the fourth quarter.

However, on the ensuing kickoff following Onakoy's score, Jacksonville's Colby Walden had a 99-yard touchdown run to give the Dolphins the lead for good. Eric Baker's 37-yard touchdown run with 2:17 left put Jacksonville up 24-14, and a safety on Marist's next offensive snap accounted for the game's final points.

Marist hung close for most of the game thanks to a strong defensive effort, which included three turnovers forced inside the Red Foxes' 10. On Jacksonville's second offensive series, junior cornerback Jack Marston (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) picked off a pass at his own six, and returned it 59 yards. Eight plays later, McCoy's touchdown run put Marist in front. With the Red Foxes still holding the 7-0 lead in the second quarter, sophomore safety Zach Adler (Walden, N.Y.) intercepted a pass at his own two. With the score tied 7-7 in the third period, senior defensive lineman Chris Katerianakis (Baltimore, Md.) forced a fumble that sophomore free safety James Holodnak (North Royalton, Ohio) recovered at his own four.

Jacksonville outgained Marist, 364-187. McCoy led Marist's ground efforts with 42 yards on nine carries. Junior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.), who had thrown for over 1,000 yards in the Red Foxes' previous three games, was 7-for-21 for 86 yards and an interception.

Senior linebacker Darius Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Marist with nine tackles, with one-and-a-half for a loss of yardage. Senior linebacker Mike Hagemann (Vernon, N.J.) had eight stops, and one-and-a-half were for a loss of yardage. Marston had seven solo tackles in addition to his interception return.

Marist is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in PFL play; Jacksonville is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the PFL. Marist has a bye next week, and will return to action against Butler on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Tenney Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
