Women's Soccer Shuts Out Saint Peter's, 4-0

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Four Red Foxes scored for the Marist women's soccer team in its 4-0 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Saint Peter's. Senior Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.), junior Marissa Mertens (Hicksville, N.Y.), senior Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), and freshman Juliette Loccisano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) tallied one goal each for the Red Foxes. Goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded one save in her sixth shutout this season. Marist is now 5-2 in MAAC play.

“I am very pleased with the overall team performance today,” said head coach Katherine Lyn. “From the defensive discipline to the dynamic movement in the attack, we are finally starting to perform with consistency which is what we will need for the MAAC Championships.”

Guiney headed in the first goal for the Red Foxes in the 5th minute of the game. Junior Jamie Strumwasser (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) crossed the ball into the box and connected with Guiney to take an early 1-0 lead.

Mertens netted the second goal at the 14:25 mark. She attempted a long shot from 25 yards out that fell over the head of Peacock's goalkeeper Molly O'Halloran for the 2-0 advantage.

Late in the second half in the 64th minute, junior Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) takes the ball up the left sideline before passing to Loccisano. Loccisano turned and layed it to Cartica inside the six yard line. Cartica placed a hard shot in the right corner for a 3-0 lead with 25 minutes remaining in the game.

The fourth and final goal for Marist came at the 81:16 mark. Loccisano recorded her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Megan McEnroe (St. James, N.Y.). Loccisano dribbled to the end line on the left side of the field. She cuts towards the goalkeeper before ripping a shot to the upper right corner. The Red Foxes defeated Saint Peter's, 4-0.

Defensively, it was a strong performance for Marist. The back-four, led by senior Kylee McIntosh (Cheshire, Conn.), held the Peacocks to just five shots, with only one on goal, and one corner kick.

The Red Foxes return home for two games; Monday, Oct. 14 against Yale and Wednesday, Oct. 16 against Quinnipiac. Kickoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
