NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist men's soccer team fell on the road to Iona on Wednesday afternoon, 4-0. Junior MJ Stellwag (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Marist in the 88th minute of the game.
"All momentum swung when they saved the penalty kick," said head coach Matt Viggiano. "After all the energy we expanded sat and the uphill battle it's been this year with injuries. We struggled to maintain our fight in the rest of the half. We played well in spurts but it wasn't enough to get the win today."
The Gales got on the board early, scoring at the 2:37 mark. Samuel Adjei received a pass from Frankli Castellanos and ripped a shot from 20 yards out to the right corner to take a 1-0 lead.
Senior Greg Davis (Jamacia, N.Y.) was awarded a penalty kick early in the first half with an opportunity to tie the game. Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello saved the kick to keep the Gaels' lead.
Iona would take a 2-0 lead at the 22:19 mark on a goal by Ignacio Maganto. Castellanos passed the ball up the left side to Maganto who netted the shot from 15 yards out. Maganto scored his second goal of the game at the 35:38 mark, heading in an assist from Castellanos. A second assist was credited to Michael Holzer. Castellanos posted the fourth and final goal for the Gaels at the 54:45 mark off an assist from Adjei and Holzer. Adjei passed the ball to Castellanos and beat the keeper to score from three yards out.
Stellwag scored for the Red Foxes in the 88th minute of the game off a shot from 25 yards out. Davis was credited with the assist. Marist attempted 13 shots, with eight on goal, but were unable to convert. Senior goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario) recorded three saves. The Red Foxes dropped to 1-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
Marist faces Siena next week, Wednesday, Oct. 30, at home in its seventh MAAC game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
