LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Marist men's soccer team fell to Rider in its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game during the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon. The Broncs defeated the Red Foxes 3-1. Goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario) recorded four saves.
"We played well for a large majority of the match," said head coach Matt Viggiano. "After an even first half we had Rider pinned in their end the whole second half. Unfortunately we were done in by a few mental errors and a couple unlucky bounces. We must continue to focus and look to get three points at home on Wednesday."
Marist outshot Rider 7-4 in the first half despite being shutout. Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Dylan Lee (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) each attempted two shots for the Red Foxes. The Broncs put the first points on the board in the 42nd minute. Christian Flath scored his first goal of the season off a direct free kick from 25 yards out. Rider had a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Broncs wasted no time increasing their lead, scoring in the 47th minute to earn a 2-0 advantage. Flath passed to James Greco who netted the goal from 20 yards out.
Twenty-two seconds later Marist cut the deficit to one, scoring at the 46:39 mark. Steven Arraiano (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) posted the goal for the Red Foxes. Dylan MacVane (Middlegrove, N.Y.) fed a long pass up the field to Arraiano who tapped the ball by the Broncs goalkeeper from ten yards out.
In the 53rd minute, Davis took his third shot of the game, hitting the upper crossbar. Three other Red Foxes attempted shots for Marist in the second half including Lee, Arraiano and Gerry Ceja (Port Chester, N.Y.).
Rider responded at the 66:14 mark to take a 3-1 lead. Ryan Walsh scores on an open net off a cross from Justin Veltri.
Marist attempted four shots in the remaining ten minutes along with three corner kicks but were unable to convert. The Broncs defeated the Red Foxes 3-1.
Marist returns home for two games: Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Canisius and Saturday, Oct. 12 against Saint Peter's. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, at Tenney Stadium.
