POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team defeated Rider on Saturday night by a score of 5-0. Senior Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) scored three goals for the Red Foxes. This is the first hat trick since 1999 and second in program history. Guiney also earned two program records: all-time points (63) and most ever points in a single game with seven. Sophomore Jessica Fanelli (Katonah, N.Y.) and freshman Ashlee Burke (East Northport, N.Y.) scored one goal each.
Marist dominated in the first half, outshooting Rider 9-2. Guiney netted the first goal of the game in the 15th minute. Junior Jamie Strumwasser (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) crossed the ball from the left side of the field into the middle of the box. Guiney got a head on it and scored in the upper left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Guiney, scoring her second goal of the night, gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead at the 39:57 mark. Senior Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) booted a long pass from 30 yards out. Guiney connected and tapped the ball past diving Broncs goalkeeper, Bethany-May Howard.
Seconds later, at the 40:23 mark, Fanelli recorded her first career goal. Junior Marissa Mertens (Hicksville, N.Y.) fed Fanelli a short pass across the goal from inside the box. Fanelli tapped the ball to the lower left corner to secure Marist's 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Red Foxes' scoring streak continued in the second half as Guiney netted her third goal of the game. Guiney dribbled up the left sideline and took a hard shot from 30 yards out. The ball dropped over the goalkeepers head to give Marist a 4-0 lead.
Moments later, at the 57:26 mark, Burke connected with a Guiney corner kick and headed the ball to earn a 5-0 advantage with less than 30 minutes remaining in the second half. The Red Foxes would shutout the Broncs and move to 3-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
