BUFFALO, N.Y. – Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) netted an overtime game-winner as the Marist women's soccer team defeated Canisius, 1-0. Freshman Ashlee Burke (East Northport, N.Y.) was credited with the assist. Goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded seven saves for Marist in her fifth shutout this season, surpassing her total of four shutouts from last season. The Red Foxes are now 4-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
“I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Katherine Lyn. “This is our first overtime win this season. We have dominated games before but never found a way to win which shows a lot of progress in our character on the field.”
Despite scoreless regulation, Marist had an advantage in both shots (30-14) and corner kicks (8-6) in the game. In a dominating offensive effort, Guiney recorded 15 shots, including eight on goal. Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) and Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) posted four and three shots, respectively. The defensive backline, including Kylee McIntosh (Cheshire, Conn.) and Devon Cummings (Marlton, N.J.), held the Golden Griffins to just seven shots on goal during regulation and none in overtime.
Guiney scored the game-winner in the 99th minute off a pass from Burke. Guiney beat the keeper and shot to the upper right corner from 18 yards out to earn the Red Foxes a 1-0 victory. Guiney, coming off a hat trick in last week's match against Rider, has posted four goals and one assist in Marist's last two games.
The Red Foxes face Saint Peter's on the road on Saturday, Oct. 12. Marist returns home on Monday, Oct. 14 to face Yale in its last non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
