Marist Downs Jacksonville In PFL Thriller, 42-35

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team earned a 42-35 victory over Jacksonville in a Pioneer Football League (PFL) contest at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.

Senior wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had six receptions for 162 receiving yards and three touchdowns, which enabled him to break the program record for receiving touchdowns in a season with 11. Senior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) tied his own single-game program record with five touchdown passes, as he went 26-for-36 for 362 yards. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Bartley Leneghan (North Royalton, Ohio) gave Marist two 100-yard receivers, as he caught nine passes for 111 yards, and scored a touchdown for the fifth straight game. Senior running back Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.) led Marist's ground game with 106 yards on 18 carries.

The Red Foxes finished with 567 yards of total offense, with 205 on the ground and 362 through the air. The game featured 1,021 yards of total offense.

Defensively, fifth-year senior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) had two sacks, enabling him to tie the program's career record of 28.5. Junior safety Zach Adler (Walden, N.Y.) had two interceptions. Senior free safety Nick Kaszei (Brook Park, Ohio) led Marist with nine tackles.

After Jacksonville scored on its opening drive, Marist responded with three touchdowns in a span of 6:52 to take a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter. However, Jacksonville scored two touchdown in a span of less than two minutes tie the game at 21 apiece just 23 seconds before halftime.

With 6:42 left in the third quarter, Looney's touchdown pass to fifth-year senior tight end Albert Wright (Bridgeport, Conn.) put Marist up 28-21, but Jacksonville tied the game just 26 seconds later on an 80-yard strike from Kade Bell to D'Andre Randle.

Marist took the lead for good on its ensuing drive, which covered 14 plays and 90 yards over the next 6:03, and culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass from Looney to Martin and fourth-and-one. Looney and Martin connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 11:50 left in the fourth quarter to put the Red Foxes up two scores. A seven-yard touchdown run by Frantz Claudio brought Jacksonville back to within seven with 5:18 left, but the Dolphins never got the ball back as Marist had three first downs on its ensuing possession.

Marist clinched a winning season by moving to 6-3 overall, and remains in a first-place tie in the PFL at 5-1. The Red Foxes return to action next Saturday with a PFL contest at Campbell. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Notes: Marist's previous single-season record for receiving touchdowns was 10 by Michael Rios last season. … Martin's three-touchdown game is the fifth by a Marist receiver in program history, and his second of the season. … Looney is just 47 yards away from breaking the program's single-season passing yards record, held by Tommy Reilly with 2,383 in 2010. … Fede is now tied with Reid Ellis for highest sack total in program history. With 11 sacks this season, Fede currently has the Red Foxes' second-highest single-season total of all-time, trailing only Ellis' 12.5 in 1997.
