Marist Ties Program Record For Wins In Triumph At Campbell

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Marist tied the program record for victories in a season in a 55-28 victory at Pioneer Football League foe Campbell on Saturday.

With the win, the Red Foxes improved to 7-3 overall, and set a program record with its sixth PFL victory of the year. Marist remains tied for first place in the league with a 6-1 mark. The Red Foxes join San Diego, Butler and Mercer as one of four teams with only one loss in league play.

Fifth-year senior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) recorded a sack to set the program's all-time record in that category. Fede entered the contest tied with Reid Ellis with 28.5 all-time. Senior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with nine tackles, including one for a loss.

Senior running back Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.) ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) threw for 280 yards and four scores. Fifth-year senior wide receiver Bartley Leneghan (North Royalton, Ohio) had 145 yards receiving on five receptions and two touchdowns.

The Red Foxes led 14-0 after the first quarter on a pair of rushing touchdowns by Lucas. Marist doubled its lead on a pair of second quarter touchdown passes by Looney, with one going to Leneghan, and the other to junior wide receiver Matt Tralli (Croton, N.Y.). Marist led 28-7 at the half, and led by as much as 34 after Lucas' third rushing touchdown and a 67-yard strike from Looney to Leneghan took place midway through the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Campbell cut the deficit to 20 on two occasions. However, Looney ran for a touchdown and threw one to senior wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) in the fourth quarter.

For Campbell (2-8, 1-6), quarterback Brian Hudson threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Farris had six tackles, including two for a loss of yardage.

The total of 55 points is the second highest single-game total in school history, and the most the Red Foxes scored in a game in 15 years. As a result, Marist broke the school record for points in a season. The Red Foxes, now with 345 points this year, had scored 305 in 2005.

Marist had previously won seven games in a season seven times in the past - 1990, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2005 and 2009.

Marist concludes the regular season next Saturday with a home game against Mercer (9-1 overall, 5-1 PFL). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. A win would give the Red Foxes at least a share of their first Pioneer Football League championship in school history. Prior to the game, the program will honor its senior class with a Senior Day ceremony. Tickets are available for purchase on GoRedFoxes.com.
