POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist head women's basketball coach Brian Giorgis eclipsed 100 points for the first time in his career as the Red Foxes defeated Northeastern, 103-66. This is the first century game for Marist since 2002 against Columbia (104-47). The Red Foxes move to 6-4 overall, and remain 1-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Marist is currently on a five game-winning streak.
Four Red Foxes scored in double digits tonight against the Huskies as Marist collectively shot .654 from the field. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) continues to be a dominant force for Marist, pacing the squad with 25 points, shooting 10-15 from the field and 3-6 from beyond the arc. Senior Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) posted 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) matched a career-high 19 points with an additional five rebounds and assists. Freshman Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) posted a career-high 14 points and five rebounds.
Marist opened up hot, shooting 6-6 in the first three minutes of play, paced by 11 points from Blais to lead 15-4 with just under 17 minutes remaining. The Red Foxes went on a 24-10 run, fueled by nine points from Fogarty to give Marist a 39-14 lead with under nine minutes to play. Following a 25 point home team advantage, Northeastern began chipping away at the lead, cutting the deficit to as little as 10 with under a minute remaining. The Red Foxes headed into the locker room with a 54-40, 14 point lead thanks to a Dulin free-throw and Coffey's second three-point halftime buzzer beater of the season.
The Red Foxes earned a 32 point lead with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation. The lead was earned by a 27-8 run by Marist, including seven points from Blais and six from senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.). The Huskies scored five unanswered points to cut the deficit 81-54 with just over nine minutes to play. Marist responded with a 14-3 run to lead by 38 at the under four timeout. The Red Foxes scored another eight points to close the half, resulting in a 103-66 victory.
Marist returns home on Saturday, Dec. 21 to face #20/19 Oklahoma. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena. Tickets can be purchased on GoRedFoxes.com.
