POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 70-59 loss to Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Friday night at McCann Arena.

The Red Foxes trailed 37-26 at halftime, and were down 20 early in the second half before climbing back into the game. Marist cut its deficit to six on three occasions, the last of which coming with 1:47 to play, but was unable to cut the deficit any further.

Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes in points (23) and rebounds (five). His scoring total was a game high. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) added 11, marking the third straight game he scored in double digits.

For Manhattan, point guard Michael Alvarado had a team-high 18 points on the strength of a 10-for-12 performance from the free-throw line. Although the Red Foxes held Preseason First Team All-MAAC selection George Beamon to 3-for-11 shooting from the field, he recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Beamon shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Rhamel Brown contributed 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high five blocked shots.

Marist never led in the game. The score was tied twice, with the last time being at 6-6 with 16:17 left in the first half. From there, Manhattan scored the game's next 13 points in a span of 3:06 in which six different Jaspers scored.

The Jaspers' largest lead of 20 came with 16:29 left to play after scoring the first nine points of the second half. Marist climbed back into the game in large part due to a stretch of scoring six points in 20 seconds thanks to a jumper from freshman forward Kentrall Brooks (Bronx, N.Y.), a steal by Hart that led to a basket by Lewis, and a steal by junior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) that led to a layup by junior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Marist's late game run was due in large part to the efforts of Lewis, who scored 13 of his team's last 16 points over the final 8:14. However, the Jaspers outscored the Red Foxes 8-3 over the final 1:47 to close out the game.

Marist fell to 0-9 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC. Manhattan, the preseason coaches' poll favorite to win the conference, is 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC.

Following a stretch of eight days without a game for final exams, Marist will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 15 at College of Charleston. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
