DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Marist women's tennis team lost a hard-fought non-conference match at Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday as the Wildcats defeated the Red Foxes, 4-3. Senior Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and freshman Lisa Ventimiglia (Bayside, N.Y.) led the team's effort as they earned straight set victories in singles action.
After dropping three tight doubles matches, including two that went into tie-breaking action, to give Bethune-Cookman the doubles' point, it was up to the Red Foxes to go to work in singles play.
Raynor and Ventimiglia scored quick two-set wins in third and sixth singles over BCU's Shereen Peterson-Paul and Maria Dimitrova, respectively. Raynor won 6-4, 6-2, while Ventimiglia was victorious 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Joana Sun (Mansfield, Mass.) earned Marist's final singles' point at second singles by coming back to defeat Valentina Beresiarte in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) battled with Chinatsu Kajiwara for the decisive fourth team point through three sets of first singles action. After dropping the first set 6-2, Pang won the second set 6-1 before falling in the third set 6-4.
The Red Foxes be back in action on Wednesday, March 20 in Orlando versus Wisconsin-Green Bay.
