McCarthy's Complete Game Lifts Marist To Fifth Straight Victory

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Junior right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, and the Marist baseball team earned its fifth consecutive win with a 3-2 triumph at Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Thursday.

McCarthy retired the first six batters he faced, and scattered eight hits in the contest. He walked just two and struck out five. McCarthy improved to 2-1 on the season.

Marist recorded nine hits in the contest. Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) and junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) had two hits apiece. Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) drove in two runs, while freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) scored two runs and reached base safely four times.

Marist got on the scoreboard in its first at-bat. Pagano led off with a single, and scored on a two-out single by Orefice. An RBI single by Siena first baseman Vincent Citro tied the game in the third.

With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, Orefice grounded to shortstop. A force was recorded at second, but Orefice beat the throw to first to avoid an inning-ending double play, which allowed Pagano to come home with the Red Foxes' second run.

Siena loaded the bases with two outs in its half of the fifth, but McCarthy struck out Siena's leading hitter, Mike Fish, on three straight swing-and-misses to end the inning.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Marist until the ninth, when Shank's two-out double brought home freshman second baseman Matt Belitz (Ossining, N.Y.), who had led off the inning with a walk.

In the bottom of the ninth, Siena mounted a rally. The Saints scored one run, and had the tying run at third and winning run at first with one out. Pinch-hitter Dave Hoffmann hit a hard grounder to third, which McQuail went to the ground to field. McQuail threw home to cut off the tying run, and junior catcher Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) applied the tag to Siena second baseman Mike Allen for the second out. McCarthy then retired Citro on a one-hopper to Belitz to end the game.

Siena starter Matt Gage (2-4), who started and went seven-plus innings, took the loss.

Marist is now 11-8 overall and 4-0 in the MAAC; Siena fell to 6-17 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning second game.
