FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In a match of two of the top teams in the MAAC, the preseason favorite Fairfield Stags, withheld a strong effort by the visiting Marist Red Foxes to earn the 4-3 decision. After winning the doubles' point 2-1, the Red Foxes were only able to muster two wins in singles action, though two other matches went three sets. Senior Joana Sun (Mansfield, Mass.) led Marist with victories in both events.
Sun's day began by teaming up with freshman Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and defeating Fairfield's #1 doubles team of Yajima and Koladzyn decisively, 8-1. In #3 singles, Sun cruised over Fairfield's Allison Radde in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
A victory by the freshmen duo of Melissa Carlay (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Kaye Eastman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) in #3 doubles action over Pirrello and Jackson by an 8-6 score gave Marist the doubles' point and the early 1-0 match lead.
Junior Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) defeated Carolina Koladzyn in #4 singles by a 6-4, 6-4 result to score the Red Foxes' second point in singles action.
In a tight competition, senior Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Eastman had three-set battles unfortunately go down in favor of the Stags. After winning the first set at #2 7-5, Raynor fell in the final two sets, 6-4 and 6-3 versus Sharissa Ryan. In Eastman's #6 clash with Nikki Jackson, the freshman lost the first set 6-2 before coming back with a 6-3 result in the second set. In the third set, the two combatants were forced to go into tie-breaking action where Jackson held on for the point at 7-6 (8-6)
The Red Foxes be back in action on Sunday, April 14 when they host Loyola. The MAAC conference match is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. Prior to the match, Marist seniors Joana Sun and Kelsey Raynor will be honored in brief Senior Day ceremony.
