Marist Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Iona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader with Iona on Saturday at McCann Field. The Red Foxes won the first game by a score of 14-4, but dropped the nightcap, 6-1.

Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with four hits on the day.

Here is a closer look at both games:

Game One – Marist 14, Iona 4

After spotting Iona two runs in the first, Marist scored one in the first, followed by six in the second and three in the third. The Red Foxes added a single run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

Shank went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Both of hits were triples, including one that cleared the bases in Marist's six-run second. Freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, falling just a home run short of the cycle. Junior right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored three runs. The Red Foxes finished with 13 hits, and had seven batters reach base due to being hit by a pitch.

Senior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) earned the win to improve to 5-1. Bielak struck out five and allowed two runs in six innings. Sophomore right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) went the final three to pick up his second save.

Iona starter Steve Basile, who went the first 2.2 innings, took the loss to fall to 0-4. Third baseman Matthew Kriss went 3-for-5.

Game Two – Iona 6, Marist 1

Iona's Eddie Macaluso earned his first win of the season (1-6) by going all the way in the seven-inning contest. Macaluso scattered five hits, worked around six walks, struck out five and dug in when Marist had scoring chances, as he stranded 10 Red Foxes on base.

Iona scored once in its half of the first, but Marist tied the score in the third on a two-out double by junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.), which brought home Pagano.

However, Iona answered with a five-run fourth, with all runs coming with two outs. Left fielder Joseph Sessa delivered a two-run single in the inning, which included four Iona hits, an error, a hit batsman and a balk.

Iona outhit Marist, 8-5. Shank, who went 2-for-3, was the only Red Fox to have a multi-hit game. Senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) took the loss to fall to 6-4, which ended a streak of wins in five straight starts. Junior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and junior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) retired all four batters he faced.

Marist is now 19-14-1 overall and 10-4 in the MAAC; Iona is 6-32 overall and 2-12 in MAAC play. The teams will conclude their series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
