Box Score

FISHKILL, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team suffered a 10-3 loss to Army in the eighth annual WRWD Hudson Valley Baseball Classic at Dutchess Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,512 on Wednesday night.

Marist junior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) started and tossed four shutout innings. Eich allowed just one baserunner, which came on an infield single in the first inning.

Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) and sophomore left fielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) each had two hits.

Both teams had 11 hits. Army shortstop Alex Jensen went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a double. Designated hitter Andrew Johnson went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Center fielder Jacob Page went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Army starter Patrick Gardner went 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts. The Black Knights' second pitcher, Brian Hapeman (1-1) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings. Gunnar Carroll pitched the final 2.1 innings for his third save, as he entered the game with two runners on base and a four-run lead in the seventh. Marist sophomore right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.), the Red Foxes' second pitcher, took the loss to fall to 2-2.

Army broke open the scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth, and then added three in the sixth thanks to a two-run single by Johnson. Marist cut its deficit to 5-1 in the seventh when junior catcher Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) hit a leadoff double to the right-center gap and scored on an RBI single by Laurino. However, the Black Knights answered with four in the seventh, an inning which included back-to-back RBI doubles by Jensen and first baseman Patrick Mescher. Marist then added two in the eighth on an RBI double by Orefice and sacrifice fly by Passerelle. Army answered with a single run in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Marist fell to 20-15-1; Army improved to 20-18. The Red Foxes will return to action this weekend with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series at Canisius. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
