Marist Cruises Past Binghamton For Non-Conference Win, 9-2

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) each had two hits and two RBIs – including an inside-the-park home run by Shank – as the Marist baseball team recorded a 9-2 non-conference victory at Binghamton on Tuesday.

Freshmen center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore left fielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) each had two hits, with Pagano belting a double and triple, and Laurino scoring a pair of runs. Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) drove in two runs, and graduate designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored two runs. Marist outhit Binghamton, 12-7, with five hits going for extra bases

Junior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season by allowing just two runs over 6.2 innings. Eich (1-1) was relieved junior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.), who allowed just one hit and no runs over the final 2.1 innings.

A two-run single by Orefice in the top of the first put Marist on the scoreboard. Binghamton tied the game in the third with three consecutive hits, including a home run by designated hitter Shaun McGraw.

Marist then broke the game open in the middle innings with three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) led off the fourth with an opposite field double, and was driven home by a Pagano triple. After a walk to Helmrich, Swertfager squeezed home Pagano. Laurino's sacrifice fly brought in Helmrich to give the Red Foxes a 5-2 lead.

Marist scored both of its runs in the fifth with two outs, with an RBI single by Swertfager followed by an error. Laurino led off the sixth with an opposite field double, and was driven home by Shank's inside-the-park home run, which closed out the scoring.

Starter Jake Cryts (1-1), who went the first 3.1 innings, took the loss for Binghamton. Shortstop John Howell was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Marist improved to 22-17-1; Binghamton fell to 21-18. The teams split their two games this season, with each team winning on the road. Binghamton posted an 11-9 victory at Marist on April 16.

Marist returns to action with a pair of seven-inning games on Wednesday at Brown. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
