Marist Earns Doubleheader Split At Manhattan, Wins Game Two 16-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Manhattan on Saturday. After dropping the first game 3-2, the Red Foxes bounced back for a 16-1 victory in the second game.

On the day, senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) led the Red Foxes with five hits. Shank was 2-for-5 with an RBI in the first game, and 3-for-6 with a double, home run, four RBIs and two runs scored in the second game.

The second game win snapped Manhattan's 21-game home winning streak at Van Cortlandt Park.

Here is a closer look at both games:

Game One – Manahttan 3, Marist 2

With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Manhattan third baseman Joe McClennan laced a two-run double down the left-field line to erase a one-run deficit and put his team ahead for good.

After spotting Manhattan a 1-0 lead, Marist tied the game in the fourth when junior right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) drove in a run on an infield error. The Red Foxes took a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Shank's RBI single brought home freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.), who had reached with a one-out triple.

Senior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) started for Marist and went seven innings, allowing seven hits, one run and one walk while striking out three. Junior right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) pitched the eighth and took the loss, which dropped his record to 2-2.

Reliever Michael Scarinci pitched two innings of relief to earn the win for Manhattan, and Jacob Marchus pitched the ninth for the save.

Game Two – Marist 16, Manhattan 1

The Red Foxes scored runs in six of the seven innings in game two: one in the first, five in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, six in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the second game, and Pagano scored three runs and drove in three runs despite not having an official at-bat. Pagano drew four walks – two with the bases loaded – and had a sacrifice fly.

Marist's entire five-run second inning rally started with two outs and none on, as six consecutive Red Foxes reached safely. With Marist leading 2-0, Shank's three-run double broke the game open.

In the fifth, the Red Foxes batted around. The inning started with a Shank homer to left field, and included a three-run double by Orefice. Marist's final run came on a homer by graduate left fielder Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) to start the seventh.

Senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) earned his fourth straight complete game victory, as he ran his record to 5-3. Houseal scattered six hits, walked no one and struck out three.

Manhattan starter Michael Martin, who went the first 1.2 innings, took the loss. The Jaspers scored their lone run in the fourth on an RBI single by Andrew Gorecki.

Marist now stands at 15-11 overall and 6-2 in the MAAC; Manhattan is now 12-15 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will attempt to win their third consecutive MAAC series on Sunday, when the teams meet in the series final at noon at Van Cortlandt Park.
