Marist Baseball Swept In Doubleheader At Brown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Marist baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Brown on Wednesday. In a pair of seven-inning games, the Red Foxes dropped game one by a score of a 4-3, and the second game by a 10-7 count.

Marist senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) had two hits in each game, and finished the day 4-for-7 with two runs scored.

Here is a closer look at both games:

Game One – Brown 4, Marist 3

After Marist scored in its first at-bat, Brown scored all four of its runs in the bottom half of the inning. Catcher Wes Van Boom belted a bases-clearing double in the inning.

The Red Foxes fought back with RBI singles by junior catcher Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman designated hitter Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. However, Marist was retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sophomore right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) took the loss and fell to 1-3 on the season. Freshman left-hander Marty Martens (Doylestown, Pa.) pitched six scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Martens did not allow a run or a walk.

Anthony Galan (2-5) earned the complete game victory for Brown.

Game Two – Brown 10, Marist 7

Pagano and graduate designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) each scored on wild pitches to give Marist a 2-0 lead after two innings. But Brown roared back with four runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.

A two-run homer by Helmrich in the fifth made the score 7-4. The Red Foxes then tied the game with three in the sixth. Freshman Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.) had an RBI triple, which was followed by an RBI single from junior Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.). Marist then tied the game on a two-out infield error. However, Brown answered with three of its own in the sixth, including a two-run homer by right fielder Will Marcal.

Marcal went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, and left fielder Jake Levine was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Eddie Fitzpatrick (2-1) struck out three over a scoreless 1.2 innings to earn the win for Brown. Junior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.), who pitched the final three innings, took the loss (0-1).

Marist is now 22-19-1; Brown is 7-32.

Marist returns to action with a three-game conference series at Saint Peter's this weekend. The Red Foxes and Peacocks will play a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday. Play on both days will begin at noon.
