PHILADELPHIA - The Marist women's soccer team fell in its season opener Monday night to Drexel in double overtime by a score of 2-1.
Senior Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) scored the lone goal for Marist along with two additional shots. Junior Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) had the assist to Panzner. Goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded four saves.
Drexel took an early 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game with a goal by Jessica Sarkisian and assisted by Lauren Stollar.
The Red Foxes applied pressure on the Drexel defense and outshot them in the first half 5-4.
Marist had several scoring opportunities in the second half, including four corner kicks. The Red Foxes tied the game 1-1 with 11:48 left in regulation. Epstein received a pass from a give-and-go from a teammate on the right sideline. She crossed the ball into the box and Panzner headed the ball in for the goal.
A hard fought battle by both teams kept the game tied heading into overtime. Marist played a strong first overtime period defensively, forcing a second overtime. Drexel's Alyssa Findlay scored the winning goal off an assist from Civanni Moss with under two minutes remaining in overtime.
The Red Foxes are back in action for their home opener on Thursday Aug. 29 against UMass Lowell at Tenney Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
