STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Marist men's and women's cross country teams competed well on Saturday, racing against some of the best regional and national competition at the Wolfie Invitational, hosted by Stony Brook.
The meet consisted of the top-ranked women's team in the country, Providence, and several other top-ranked men's and women's team, including the Columbia women and Stony Brook men.
On the men's side, the Red Foxes featured a young squad, with nine of the 15 runners being freshmen. Saturday's course was also longer than most, with the total distance being 8,100 meters. Freshman Jake Hensler (North Massapequa, N.Y.) had the best finish for the Red Foxes, crossing the finish line in 27:08.80, good for a 34th place finish. John Lee (Wading River, N.Y.) was right behind him, finishing 36th in 27:11.07.
The women's race featured all of Marist's runners and, like the men, was a long race than usual, covering 5,200 meters. Sophomore Kristen Traub (Wayne, N.J.) was the Red Foxes' top finisher, placing 16th in 19:17.97. Michelle Gaye (Greenlawn, N.Y.) was next for Marist, crossing the finish line in 19:32.24 to finish 19th.
Both programs are back in action next Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Iona College Meet of Champions. Racing begins at 9:30 a.m.
