RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team dropped an 86-79 overtime contest at Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday.
Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) scored a team-high 25 points, going 10-for-17 from the field. Lewis added five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) set a career high in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 24 thanks in large part due to a 10-for-10 performance from the free-throw line. Senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) added 15.
Manhattan point guard Michael Alvarado, who shot 13-for-17 from the field, led all scorers with 33. The Jaspers had four double-digit scorers, as Rich Williams, Emmy Andujar and Shane Richards added 13, 11 and 10, respectively. Andujar hauled in a game-high nine rebounds.
Manhattan scored the game's first eight points, and jumped out to a 10-point first-half lead as the Red Foxes did not convert a field goal in the game's first 6:28. However, Marist used a 20-5 spurt, punctuated by a three-pointer from junior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to grab a five-point lead with 9:16 left in the half. Manhattan immediately answered with a 10-0 run, and held the lead for the rest of the half. With 10 seconds left in the half, Marist had the ball down 33-30, but a defensive rebound and free throw by Donovan Kates, coupled with a steal and dunk by Williams, gave the Jaspers a 36-30 lead going to the locker room.
With 14:38 to play, a three-pointer by Richards gave Manhattan its largest lead at 51-38. Over the next 9:17, Marist responded with a ferocious 28-6 run in which the Red Foxes shot 11-for-15 from the field and Hart scored eight points.
Two free throws by Hart gave Marist a 73-69 lead with 1:57 left. However, a layup by Alvarado, and a steal and dunk by Williams tied the score at 73 apiece with 1:15 to go. Neither team scored in the last 75 seconds of regulation.
Bowie's jumper on the first possession of overtime gave Marist a 75-73 lead. With three minutes left in the period, a three-pointer by Williams put Manhattan up 76-75, and the Jaspers held the lead the rest of the way.
