FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist women's basketball team (11-4, 5-0 MAAC) defeated Fairfield (9-6, 4-2) on Saturday, 60-36. With the win, the Red Foxes continue its ten game winning-streak and improve to 5-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) led all players with 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field. Ockenden matched a career-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exter, N.H.) posted 12 points and four rebounds. Seniors Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) and Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded nine points apiece. Dulin had five rebounds and four assists while O'Connor had four boards and a team-high three steals.
O'Connor hit a three-pointer to open up the game to take an early 3-0 lead; a lead Marist would maintain for the rest of the half. Following a three by Ockenden and a jumper by Coffey, the Red Foxes led the Stags, 8-4 at the 14:34 mark. Marist went on a 10-0 run over the following three minutes, including four points from O'Connor and two apiece from Ockenden and Dulin to take an 18-4 lead with 11:16 to play.
Fairfield's Kristin Schatzlein broke the silence with a three to make it 18-7. Each team would score once more before Marist's 11-0 run, including six points from Ockenden, to take a 31-11 lead with 4:37 remaining. The Red Foxes would close the half with two perfect trips to the free-throw line by Blais and freshman Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) to take a 35-16 lead at halftime; the fewest number of points Marist has held an opponent to in any first half this season.
Marist opened up the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 42-16 lead at the 18:11 mark. Following a three by Fairfield's Schatzlein, the Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run, leading 48-19 with 13:27 remaining. Over the following ten minutes, Fairfield outscored Marist 13-6 to pull within 23 with less than four minutes to play. Junior Bri Holmes (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) scored the final five points for Marist as the Red Foxes earned a 60-36 victory over Fairfield, remaining undefeated in conference play.
Following this matchup, Marist returns home to face Iona (12-2, 5-0 MAAC) in a conference matchup on Monday, Jan. 13. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena.
