LEWISTON, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball team (12-5, 6-1 MAAC) defeated Niagara (4-12, 2-5) on Friday, 74-59. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 6-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) led all scorers with 27 points, matching her career-high, and an additional six rebounds. Blais shot 9-11 from the field, 5-6 from beyond the arc, and 4-4 from the line. Senior Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) posted 11 points and led the Red Foxes in three categories; assists with seven, rebounds with six, and steals with four. Senior Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) posted 15 points, including 10 in the second half, four rebounds, three steals, and a team-high two blocks. Sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) contributed 11 points and senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) matched a game-high four steals.
Niagara played Marist closely in the first half, tying the score and taking the lead on three separate occasions. The first tie occurred at the 15:49 mark, knotted at eight apiece. Blais, Dulin, and O'Connor posted the points for Marist; Gabby Baldasare, Chanel Johnson and Val McQuade got on the board for the Purple Eagles. The Red Foxes took a 10 point lead at the 12:57 mark, its largest of the first half, following a 13-3 run, featuring five points from Blais. Niagara fought back, notching an 8-0 run to pull within two with 7:49 left to play.
Marist and Niagara shot basket-for-basket over the next minute and a half, resulting in the second tie of the game at 23 all. Taylor McKay gave the Purple Eagles a one point edge following a trip to the free-throw line but Dulin quickly put the Red Foxes back on top with a driving layup. Three points by Baldasare locked the score back up at 27 at the 4:15 mark. The half closed with a 7-4 advantage for Marist as the Red Foxes narrowly led 34-31 at the half.
Blais opened up the second half with two threes, split by a three from Baldasare, giving Marist a 40-36 lead early on. The Red Foxes propelled ahead with an 11-2 run, including four points from Dulin and three from Blais, making the score 51-40 at the 13:25 mark. Niagara's Sylvia Maxwell sank three straight free-throws in a comeback attempt to pull within eight with 12:01 to play.
Marist doubled the Purple Eagles in scoring over the following ten minutes, outscoring Niagara 18-9, featuring eight points from O'Connor. The Red Foxes took a 69-52 lead, their largest of the game thus far with 2:41 to play. The Purple Eagles barley outscored Marist over the last couple minutes, 7-6, but it was not enough to catch up as the Red Foxes sealed its 74-59 victory.
Following this matchup, Marist wraps up its trip to Buffalo with a faceoff against Canisius on Sunday, Jan. 19. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
