POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team was defeated by Rider 66-56 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Saturday night at McCann Arena.
In his first game back after missing the previous two due to injury, senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) had a team-high 15 points. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart added 11 points.
Rider's Anthony Myles led all scorers with 23 points. Myles shot 5-for-7 from three-point range. Daniel Stewart had 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Marist forced 24 Rider turnovers while only committing 10. However, the Broncs outrebounded the Red Foxes 38-22, partially due to shooting .513 (20-for-39) from the field and .500 (7-for-14) from three-point range. Marist shot just .320 (16-for-50 from the field) and .167 (3-for-18) from three-point range. Both teams performed well from the line, as Rider shot .826 (19-for-23) and Marist shot .808 (21-for-26). The Red Foxes did not miss a free throw in the second half, converting all 17 of their attempts.
The first half included just 39 total points and 23 turnovers, with neither team scoring in the first 3:32. After a three-pointer by junior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put Marist up 5-4 with 14:09 left in the first half, the Red Foxes did not convert a field goal in the next 7:11, a time frame which included a 15-1 Rider run.
However, the Red Foxes dug in defensively themselves. After a three-pointer by Rider's Tommy Pereira gave the Broncs a 19-6 lead with 8:20 left in the first half, Marist went on an 11-0 run over the next 7:27. This stretch included six points off the bench from junior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Stewart then answered with a three-point play with 53 seconds left in the half to give Rider a 22-17 lead heading into halftime.
Rider started the second half on an 11-4 run, and extended its lead to a game high of 19 with 8:46 to play on a three-pointer by Pereira. Marist cut the lead to eight on two occasions in the final two minutes.
Marist fell to 5-12 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC; Rider improved to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes return to action on Monday night, when they host MAAC foe Saint Peter's at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available for sale on GoRedFoxes.com.
