NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 80-74 loss at Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Friday at the Gallagher Center.
Marist junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) totaled 25 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. The point, rebound and steal totals were game highs; the assist total tied a game high. Lewis's point total vaulted him into 10th place on Marist's all-time scoring list, and he now has 1,304 career points.
Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.), senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) and senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) gave Marist four scorers in double digits with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Although the Red Foxes shot .528 (28-for-53) from the field, they shot just .500 (11-for-22) from the free-throw line and committed 16 turnovers.
For Niagara, Antoine Mason scored a team-high 22 points. Mason, the NCAA's leading scorer, was held to four points in the first half, but had 18 in the second. Marvin Jordan added 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-6 performance from three-point range. Jordan scored 13 points in the first half.
The game was tied at 34 apiece at halftime. The Purple Eagles outscored the Red Foxes 46-40 in the second half. The contest included 14 lead changes and six ties.
A basket by Lewis with 7:36 to play tied the score at 56 apiece. On the ensuing possession, Niagara's Marcus Ware split a pair of free throws, which gave the Purple Eagles the lead for good with 7:14 to go. Mason added a three-pointer on Niagara's next possession.
Marist fell to 6-13 overall and 3-6 in MAAC play; Niagara is 6-15 overall and 5-7 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action at Canisius at 2 p.m. Sunday.
