POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball (9-4, 3-0 MAAC) defeated Manhattan (3-9, 2-1 MAAC) 70-46 on Friday night, winning its eighth straight game this season, 34th consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game, and improving to 3-0 in conference play. Senior Emma O'Connor led the Red Foxes with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) posted 13 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt junior Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had a season-high 11 points. Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) recorded seven rebounds for the Red Foxes and junior Natalie Gomez-Martinez (Andover, Mass.) led the team with five assists.
Blais opened up the game for Marist, scoring a jumper in the first minute of play. Manhattan responded with a three-pointer from Nicole Isaacs to take a 3-2 lead with just under 19 minutes to play; the only lead the Jaspers would see in the first half. The teams went basket-for-basket over the next five minutes, leading to a 6-6 draw with 14 minutes to play. The Red Foxes narrowly outshot the Jaspers 10-6 over the next few possessions to maintain a 16-12 lead with just over seven minutes to play.
A 7-0 run by Marist would put the Red Foxes up 23-12 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Ockenden kicked off the run with a three, followed by a pair of free-throws by O'Connor and a layup from freshman Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.). Manhattan broke the silence with a pair of free-throws by Nicole Anderson. The half closed on an 11-9 run in favor of Marist, fueled by three consecutive free-throws and two jumpers by Blais and a layup and a trip to the line from Jarosz.
Marist opened up the second half on a 14-6 run to lead 50-29 with just under 13 minutes to play; including five points from Lai, six points from freshman Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.), and three points by O'Connor. Manhattan scored the next five points to pull within 16, the smallest margin of deficit the Jaspers would see in the second half. O'Connor ended the run with a layup right before the 11 minute mark. The Red Foxes outscored Manhattan 16-11 over the final ten minutes of play to secure a 70-46 victory, keeping their undefeated claim in conference play.
Following this matchup, Marist has one more home MAAC matchups at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7 against Siena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena.
