FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist volleyball team lost for the first time since Sept. 6, as the Red Foxes fell to Fairfield 3-1 in the final match of a four-game road trip.

The Stags ended Marist's set winning streak at 12 by taking the opening frame 25-20 before the Red Foxes battled back to win the second set 26-24. Fairfield took the final two sets by that same score. The loss was Marist's first in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this season, as the Red Foxes are now 6-1 against conference opponents and 14-3 overall.

Marist led 8-5 at one point in the opening set, but Fairfield tied the score four times before going on a 7-2 run that increased their lead to 22-17. The Red Foxes built a 4-0 lead to begin the second set with senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) serving and led by as much as nine. Fairfield cut into the Marist lead, cutting it to 23-21, but a kill and service ace by Gilbert pulled Marist even in the contest.

Long runs by Fairfield (7-9, 3-3) in the third set put the Stags ahead in the match 2-1. A service ace from sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) gave Marist its first lead in the third set, but Fairfield went on a six-point tear and ended on a 5-1 run. Marist tied the score at 24 in the final set, but Fairfield ultimately pulled away to earn its third home victory of the season.

Senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) racked up 18 digs to give her 1,573 for her career. She is seven digs away from tying Katie Lux '06 for second place all time in program history. Junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) led the Red Foxes' attack with 12 kills. Gilbert had three of Marist's nine service aces for the match.

With a match-high 16 kills, Fairfield junior Hadley Orr was one of three Stags to finish in double digits. Senior Camille Coffey contributed 25 digs, while freshman Megan Theiller hit .400.

The Red Foxes will return to McCann Arena on Oct. 11 to begin a four-match home stand when they host MAAC foe Siena at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the Red Fox Network.
