LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Despite a career-high 33 points from red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.), the Marist men's basketball team fell in its season opener at Bucknell on Friday night, 75-72.
Hart shot 11-for-22 from the field, 7-for-11 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. He also led the Red Foxes with five rebounds and two steals.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) added 18 points, which included a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career-high nine points and drained all three of his three-point attempts.
“It was a tough game for us to bat leadoff with, playing on the road against a storied program,” said Head Coach Mike Maker, who made his Marist debut. “I'm really proud of our kids for how hard they fought and never giving in.”
Dom Hoffman led five double-digit Bucknell scorers with 14 points, and had a game-high nine rebounds. Bucknell outrebounded Marist, 41-29.
Each team committed just seven turnovers.
Hart scored the game's first points with a three on Marist's first possession. Bucknell responded with an 8-0 run, and the Bison led by as much as eight in the first half. Bucknell then held Marist without a field goal for the final 4:37 of the first half, and took a 37-33 halftime lead.
Bucknell used a 6-0 run early in the second half to expand its lead to eight again, but the Red Foxes chipped away, and two free throws by Lewis gave Marist a 49-48 advantage with 12:05 to go. The Red Foxes led by as much as four on four separate occasions in the second half, but the Bison took the lead for good with a 10-0 run as Marist went scoreless for a stretch of 4:39.
