NEWARK, DEL. – Despite a team high 26 points from junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) the Marist women's basketball (0-1) team dropped their season opener to the Delaware Blue Hens (1-1), 70-60.
The Red Foxes jumped to an early 7-5 lead over the Blue Hens behind a Blais three pointer and two field goals apiece from junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) and first time starter and sophomore center Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) The early lead would be the last time Marist would lead in the game, trailing by as much as 16 points in the second half.
Coffey finished with 11 points and 3 assists and was the second leading scorer on the team behind Blais. Freshman's Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) and Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) scored their first career points and finished with 5 points each.
A quick drive and lay in by sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) would cut the lead to seven with 1:31 remaining but the layup would be the closest the Red Foxes came to overcoming the deficit.
The Blue Hens timely three point shooting, offensive rebounding, and a 21 point effort from sophomore guard Erika Brown proved the difference for Delaware. The team finished 9-20 from the three point line with Brown contributing with three of the nine to shoot 3-5 from behind the arc. The Red Foxes were outrebounded 47-28 giving up 15 rebounds on the offensive end.
As a team the Red Foxes shot 37.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three to the Blue Hens 40 percent from the floor and 45 percent from deep.
Junior guard Courtni Green and freshman guard Chastity Taylor were second and third on the Blue Hens in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Delaware junior Alecia Bell suffered a gruesome leg injury with around 4 minutes remaining in the first half. Play was halted for over 10 minutes as trainers and medical staff helped her on to a stretcher and to a local hospital.
“They shot the three ball extremely well but we've got to be better,” said head coach Brian Giorgis. “We know it's a long journey and a process”
The Red Foxes return to action as they head out on the road for a matchup with Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tip-off is set for 2 P.M.
