BOSTON, MASS. – The Marist women's basketball team (0-2) fell to the Northeastern Huskies (2-1), 58-51 Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes put up a solid defensive effort but cold shooting from the field doomed the Red Foxes as the team shot 17-59 overall and 5-32 from behind the three point line.

Junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) led the team in scoring and rebounding with a 15 point, 8 rebound effort. Coffey was one rebound short of her career high and was relentless in trying to get to the rim.

The only other Red Fox in double digits was junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) who finished the game with 13 points on 3-9 shooting, Blais went 6-6 from the free throw line and added 6 rebounds.

Marist normally a team that plays man-to-man started the game in a 2-3 zone and stayed that way for the majority of the half. Northeastern connected on 5-13 from the three point line at a 38 percent clip in the half, finding open shooters by swinging the ball. On the opposite end the Red Foxes three point attempts went wanting. Marist shot 3-16 in the half from three.

The Red Foxes 7-7 free throw line effort in the first half cut the deficit heading into halftime but the offense as a whole struggled from inside and outside the arc. Marist controlled the boards much better than in their last outing vs Delaware. The Red Foxes and Huskies both recorded 18 rebounds in the first half. Northeastern edged the Red Foxes on the boards overall 41-37 with Marist winning the offensive board battle 13-12.

A 10-3 Huskie run from the 12:41 mark of the second half to the 8:28 mark pushed the lead to 16 points for Northeastern, their largest of the game and a deficit the Red Foxes would be unable to overcome. Marist started the first half shooting 0-10 from behind the three point line before a three pointer from senior guard Natalie Gomez-Martinez (Andover, Mass.) broke the streak. The Red Foxes would end the game on a 13-4 run.

“We played better defensively,” said head coach Brian Giorgis. “But when you're shooting like we shot, it's tough to win.”

Forward Samantha DeFreese led the way for the Huskies, going 5-8 from the field and recording 17 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. Huskies Guard Tiffany Montagne connected on 4-11 of her three point field goals and totaled 14 points and ALL-CAA guard A'Lece Mark scored all 11 of her points in the second half in a double-double effort that included 11 rebounds.

The Marist women's basketball team heads back to Poughkeepsie for their home opener against St. John's. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M. Monday, November 24. The Red Foxes will hold their ring ceremony as part of the pre-game.

Notes: Largest lead – 16 points for Northeastern with 8:28 remaining in the second half. Northeastern assisted on 15 of their 20 made field goals. Red Foxes 20 points off 18 Northeastern turnovers. Red Foxes with 12 steals on the game, 4 steals for Brittni Lai. Red Foxes recorded their least amount of points since 3/23/13 at #5 Michigan State, L 55-47.
