POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball team (0-3) fell to the St. John's Red Storm (3-0) Monday night at McCann Arena, 49-48. Sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) had a chance to give the Red Foxes the lead in the final seconds but her floater attempt rimmed out and fell to the hands of St. John's.

In Lai's first start of the season she recorded six points, four assists, and a career high six rebounds in the losing effort. In what has been a common theme for the Red Foxes this season they trailed after half, 22-18 but outscored the opponent in the second half, 30-27.

The Red Foxes took their first lead of the game at the 10 minute mark off a three pointer from senior guard Bri Holmes (Columbus, Ohio). The Holmes three came during a 13-3 run that eventually gave the Red Foxes a 39-33 lead, the teams largest of the game.

St. John's stormed back with a 12-2 run of their own to take the lead and the team's traded punches from there. The final blow came from a running jumper at the elbow from junior guard Danajeah Grant with 41 seconds remaining that would give the Red Storm the lead for good.

The Red Foxes finished the game shooting 15-50 from the floor, 5-20 from the three point line, and an uncharacteristic 13-24 from the free throw line. Despite the poor shooting the defense held strong holding the Red Storm to 35.6 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent shooting from deep.

The Red Storm we're led by sophomore Jade Walker who recorded a team high 14 points while adding 8 rebounds. Senior forward Amber Thompson recorded a game high 17 rebounds, 11 defensive and added six total points.

Junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) recorded a team high 14 points, going a perfect 4-4 from the field. Junior guard Sydney Coffey had another strong game attacking the basket and recorded 12 points and four rebounds.

“I couldn't be more proud of my players for the effort,” said head coach Brian Giorgis. “We really followed the gameplan despite a few breakdowns here and there.”

The Red Foxes head to Waco, Texas for three games at the BTI Classic starting on Friday, Nov. 28 against Stetson. The Red Foxes will also take on Utah State and national powerhouse Baylor during the trip.
