WACO, TEXAS – The Marist Women's Basketball team (1-5) fell to the Baylor Lady Bears (4-1), 90-60 in the last game of the Basketball Travelers Classic Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
Junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) and sophomore center Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) combined for 10 Marist points in a row during the middle of the second half, a mini run for the Red Foxes late in the game that would cut into a 37 point deficit. Coffey and Fogarty finished the game tied for the team lead with 13 points, Coffey also added three rebounds and three assists.
The Red Foxes attacked the basket much better in the latter stages and earned their first free throws of the game at the 11:02 mark in the second half. Marist would go on to shoot 12 more in the game and finish 10-13 at the stripe.
The Red Foxes shot 35 percent in the first half on 12-34 shooting and 12 percent from deep on 2-17 shooting. Marist would have assists on eight of their 12 field goals in the frist half.
Junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.), who was named to the Basketball Travelers Classic All-Tournament team, tied for the team lead at the half with five points along with two rebounds. Blais totaled 37 minutes a game while averaging 13 points and five rebounds per game. Blais was also a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line in the three game stretch.
Freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) recorded five points as well on 2-3 shooting and one three pointer in the first half. Clement would finish with seven points. Freshman forward Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.), making her first career start, totaled four points and pulled down five early rebounds in the half.
Marist hung tough for the first half of the period but didn't lead at any point. A 7-7 tie with 15:23 remaining in the first half would be the closest the Red Foxes would get. Normally able to get to the line the Red Foxes didn't record a single free throw in the first half. Baylor won the rebounding battle in the first half 26-18, 11-7 on the offensive glass.
For the game the Red Foxes shot 23-64 for 36 percent from the field and 4-30 from deep for 13 percent. The Baylor Lady Bears finished the game 40-74 from the field for 54 percent and 2-5 from three. The Red Foxes had 11 turnovers to Baylor's nine. The Lady Bears held the rebounding advantage 49-29.
"I was really proud of our kids," said head coach Brian Giorgis. "We played our best of the year and it's disappointing it doesn't show in the final or the box score."
The Red Foxes head home for their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action of the year as they take on Monmouth, Friday, Dec. 5 at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M.
