POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball team (4-5, 2-0 MAAC) won its third in a row and fourth out of its last five defeating Albany (4-3), 61-58 Wednesday night at the McCann Arena.

Behind a double-double performance from senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and clutch free throws from junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) the Red Foxes were able to fend off a furious comeback from the Great Danes.

Jarosz would finish the game with a team high 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Coffey and junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) each tallied 15 points, Blais would also add four rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward Payton Birchmeier (Corrunna, Mich.) had a strong all-around game putting up five points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Red Foxes would lead by as much as 20 points in the second half but long range shooting and a few layups would pull the Great Danes to a two point deficit with 1:45 remaining. Two big offensive rebounds on back to back possessions by Coffey and Birchmeier would lead to free throws for Coffey and Blais that would extend the lead and clinch the game for good.

The Great Danes would start the game on an 8-0 run that lasted until the Red Foxes first basket with 12:53 remaining in the first half. The Red Foxes would then go on a 14-5 run to take the lead at the nine minute mark. The Red Foxes would eventually finish the half on a 28-12 run to take an eight point lead into halftime.

For the game the Red Foxes would shoot 40 percent from the field, 42 percent from three point range and 16-24 from the free throw line. The Red Foxes would force 14 turnovers on seven blocks and seven steals. On the game Marist was out rebounded 51-28 but only surrendered two less points in the paint, 24-22.

The Great Danes were led by a game high in points from guard Imani Tate, who scored 17 and added six rebounds, Shareesha Richards would end the game with a 15 points and 12 rebounds, her second double-double in a row against the Red Foxes.

Up next the Red Foxes will play their fourth straight game at home in December as they take on non-conference opponent Boston University on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 P.M. The Red Foxes and Terriers have five wins a piece in the series' history.
