LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 92-77 loss at Virginia Military Institute in a non-conference game on Saturday.
Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) set career highs with 26 points, 13 rebounds and two steals. Truog shot 10-for-15 from the field and 3-for-3 from three-point range. It was the first double-double of his career, and the first by a Red Fox this season.
Truog paced four Red Foxes in double figures in scoring. Freshman guard James Griffin (Brisbane, Australia), made his second career start and scored 13 points. Senior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) had 11 points, a career-high eight rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had a career-high eight rebounds to go along with six points.
VMI hit 19 three-pointers in the contest. QJ Peterson led the Keydets with 25 points, and Tim Marshall scored 20. Both Peterson and Marshall drained six three-pointers. Brian Brown (13 points) and Trey Chapman (10 points) gave the Keydets four double-digit scorers as well.
Marist scored the first five points in the game in the first minute, but VMI responded with an 18-6 run over the next 5:11. Marist cut its deficit to one on a three-pointer by Truog with 8:54 left in the half, but VMI outscored Marist 25-6 over the next 5:11 to run its lead to 20. Thanks to a stretch in which the Red Foxes held the Keydets scoreless for three minutes, Marist cut its halftime deficit to 14 at 56-42. In the second half, VMI led by as much as 21, and never led by less than 11.
Marist fell to 1-9; VMI improved to 5-6.
After a week off for final exams, Marist will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when the Red Foxes host defending Atlantic 10 champion Saint Joseph's. Tip-off at McCann Arena is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Marist played its third straight game without the trio of senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) and senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.). … Truog's previous career highs were 12 points (at Boston College, Dec. 1 of this season) and six rebounds (accomplished three times). … Marist hit more free throws (16-13) than its opponent for the sixth time in the last seven games.
