POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind torrid shooting from deep in the first half the Marist women's basketball team (5-5, 2-0) defeated the Boston University Terriers (3-7), 77-50 Saturday night at McCann Arena.
The Red Foxes started the first half on fire taking a 14-4 lead into the first media timeout behind 3-4 shooting from deep. A 15-0 run before the end of the half would see the Red Foxes into the locker room with a 46-21 halftime lead. The team would end the half shooting 20-32, 65 percent from the floor and a blistering 13-16, 81 percent from behind the three point line. Freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) scored nine points on 3-4 from deep in the half
“It's really exciting to be able to contribute, it adds to the flow of the game,” said freshman Clement. “It doesn't put too much pressure on other players when we can come in and help.”
The Red Foxes had four players score in double figures on the night. Clement scored 13 points, junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) and freshman forward Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich) added 14 points, and junior guard Sydney Coffey led the team with 19 points and five rebounds.
“It feels really good to be able to help out the team and make shots,” Birchmeier said. “It's nice to know Giorgis trusts me to go out there and make those plays.”
In the second half the Red Foxes would cool considerably, shooting only 24 percent and 1-13 from deep but the damage was done in the first as the Red Foxes led wire to wire. For the game the Red Foxes would finish with a 44 percent field goal percentage and 48 percent three point shooting percentage. The team would assist on 19 of the teams 27 baskets, force 14 Terrier turnovers and score 20 points off those turnovers. The Red Foxes had seven blocks and nine steals.
“Early in the year they both struggled but today and lately they've been shooting the ball much better,” said head coach Brian Giorgis about freshman Birchmeier and Clement. “Both of them were assertive in the offense, people sagged off them and they made shots.”
Up next Marist will play their final game out of five at home in December as they take on non-conference opponent and nationally ranked mid major power South Dakota State on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 P.M. The Red Foxes hold a 1-0 advantage in the series' history.
“They know South Dakota State is one of the best mid major teams in the country,” said Giorgis about the upcoming matchup on Sunday. “If we're looking forward to Christmas we're going to get a lot of coal on Sunday.”
