POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A balanced offensive effort from the Marist women's basketball team (6-5, 2-0 MAAC), with four different players in double digits, would push the Red Foxes past the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (8-4), 82-64 Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena.
The Red Foxes outscored the Jackrabbits 48-24 in the second half including a 15-4 run in the first four minutes of the half that would propel the team from down six to up five. With the win the Red Foxes are over .500 for the first time this season and have won their fifth straight game to go five-for-five at home in the month of December.
Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) would lead the way for the Red Foxes on the offensive and defensive end recording her second double-double of the year with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jarosz would also tie two other former players for the Marist single game block record with seven.
“I didn't have any fouls in the first half,” Jarosz said “So going into the locker room at halftime Giorgis told me to be more aggressive on defense.”
Along with Jarosz the Red Foxes had three other double digit scorers, two of which had twenty points each. Junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) shot well from the field again going 8-9 including 5-6 from three point range for 23 points, two rebounds and two steals.
Junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) slashed and drove her way to 12 free throw attempts converting 11 of them to go along with 4-for-8 shooting from the field to total 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
“The confidence of a win like that really gives us what we need going in MAAC's (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference),” said Coffey.
In an even up and down first half the Red Foxes would lead for seven minutes and 35 seconds while the Jackrabbits held the lead for eight minutes and 57 seconds. The Red Foxes jumped to an early 5-0 lead to start the game, their largest of the half. South Dakota State's largest lead would be eight points with 49 seconds remaining.
The Red Foxes shot 42 percent from the field and 55 percent on 5-for-9 shooting from deep in the half. The Jackrabbits shot 41 percent from the field and 6-for-12 from behind the arc. Nine second chance points to three and an eight to two points off turnover advantage for the Jackrabbits would give them the halftime lead, 40-34.
Freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) would do all her damage in the first half on 3-for-5 shooting from deep and her first career free throw for 10 points. Blais would trail behind Clement with eight points in the half on a perfect 3-for-3, 2-for-2 from deep but was limited to just nine minutes in the first half due to two early fouls.
For the game the Red Foxes shot 50 percent from the field on 25-50 shooting, 59 percent from three on 10-17 shooting, and converted 22 of their 26 free throws. The Jackrabbits would only convert on 8 of their 35 shots in the second half and went 2-for-14 from three point land.
“That was our best win of the year,” said head coach Brian Giorgis. “It's the best Christmas present I could have asked for.”
Following the holiday break the Red Foxes will hit the road and start up MAAC play again by taking on rival Siena, Friday, January. 2. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M. in Loudonville, N.Y. The Red Foxes are 27-28 all-time vs the Saints and will look to even up the series next time out.
