POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team was defeated by Monmouth by a score of 57-50 in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams at McCann Arena on Thursday night.

Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) led all scorers with 14 points. Senior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added eight points, a career-high four steals and two rebounds in a career-high 38 minutes, and red-shirt freshman guard Nick Colletta (Glendora, Calif.) had eight points and a team-high five rebounds in a career-high 27 minutes off the bench.

Marist lost its leading scorer, senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), just 1:42 into the contest. However, Marist used an 11-2 run to jump out to a game high lead of six at 18-12 with 12:26 left in the first half.  Monmouth responded with a 10-0 run, holding the Red Foxes scoreless over the next 6:46.

Monmouth led for the remainder of the half, although the Hawks' lead at the intermission was cut to one thanks to a three-point play by Colletta with under one second left in the half. Colletta missed a three-pointer, grabbed his own rebound, and drew a foul while sinking an off-balance 18-footer. His made free throw made the score 26-25 in favor in Monmouth.

Marist grabbed the lead one more time with 13:48 to go on a steal and thunderous dunk by Thomas. Monmouth then held Marist scoreless over the next 3:28 as it scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. The Hawks never led by less than five over the final four minutes, and they extended their lead to as much as 10.

Justin Robinson led Monmouth with 12 points. Brice Kofane added 11 and a game-high seven rebounds. The Hawks shot .511 (24-for-47 for the game.

Monmouth is now 3-4 overall; Marist is 1-6.

Marist returns to action on Sunday with a MAAC contest at Manhattan. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Freshman center Connor McClenaghan (Carrolton, Texas) set career highs for points (five), rebounds (four), blocked shots (two) and steals (two) in 16 minutes off the bench. … Freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) set career highs for points (seven) and assists (five). … Between Lee, Colletta, McClenaghan and guard James Griffin (Brisbane, Australia), players in their first full year of eligibility accounted for 101 of Marist's 200 minutes in the game. … Lawrence now has three double-digit scoring games in his last four outings. … Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) drained the first three-pointer of his career.
