RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 60-38 loss at Manhattan on Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Draddy Gymnasium.
Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) led the Red Foxes in both points (15) and rebounds (five), and tied for the team lead with?two steals.
Senior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), red-shirt freshman guard Nick Colletta (Glendora, Calif.) and freshman center Connor McClenaghan (Carrollton, Texas) each had six points. McClenaghan shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
For Manhattan, Emmy Andujar led the team with 15 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists. Rich Williams added 13 points. Ashton Pankey contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
Marist went scoreless for the first 8:29, as Manhattan jumped out to a 12-0 lead. The Red Foxes then answered with an 8-2 run over the next 4:07. Manhattan led by as much as 17 in the first half, but Marist scored the final seven points of the period ? which included a three and two free throws by Lawrence in the final 38 seconds ? to trail 29-19 at halftime.
Manhattan then held Marist scoreless for the first 3:27 of the second half. The Jaspers never led by less than 14 the rest of the way, and expanded their lead to as much as 28.
Marist shot just 8-for-41 (.195) from the field. Manhattan held a 45-29 edge in rebounds. The Red Foxes went 18-for-30 from the free-throw line as a result of 26 Manhattan fouls, while Manhattan was 3-for-6 from the line as a result of just 13 Marist fouls.
Marist is now 1-7 overall and 0-2 in MAAC play. Manhattan is 2-5 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday with a non-league game at Ivy League foe Penn. Tip-off at the historic Palestra is set for 8 p.m.
Notes: Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), who is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle, missed the first game of his career after appearing in 101 straight. ... Freshman point guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) played all 40 minutes for the third time in six starts. In those six starts, Lee has played 233 of a possible 240 minutes. ... Marist has now dropped 13 of its last 14 games at Manhattan. ... McClenaghan's total of six points was a career high. He shot 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in a career-high 25 minutes.
