POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Women's basketball team (3-5, 2-0 MAAC) earned their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the year as they defeated the Rider Broncs, 60-46 Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena.
Behind a strong performance from freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine), scoring a career high 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in her first career start, the Red Foxes would win this game leading wire to wire.
“It was great to get that experience,” Clement said. “I wasn't too jittery, I was just focused on keeping calm and contributing to the offense.”
The Red Foxes would cruise to victory as its largest lead in the game would be 18 points with 3:12 remaining in the second half and its second largest lead of the game was 17 with 1:48 remaining in the first half.
At halftime the Red Foxes led 33-18 behind 52 percent shooting from the field and an 89 percent 8-for-9 performance from the free throw line. Clement would do most of her damage in the first half notching eight of her final 12 points and three of her five rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Both junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) and senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) would notch eight points in the half to tie Clement for the team lead. Blais would go on to another stat sheet stuffing game tallying 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals. Jarosz would score a team high 17 points while grabbing six rebounds and earning three blocks and two steals.
“I'm going into the game with confidence,” Jarosz said. “I just really enjoy being out there, especially with the home crowd.”
For the Rider Broncs, Julia Duggan would lead the team with 10 points and four rebounds in only 16 minutes of action. Duggan was the only Broncs scorer in double digits on the day. As a team the Broncs were held to 27 percent shooting with six of their 16 baskets coming from behind the arc.
The Red Foxes as a team would block five shots and earn six steals in route to forcing 13 Rider turnovers. The team would tally 28 points in the paint to go along with 25 bench points. This would be the second game in a row that the Red Foxes would have at least three scorers in double digits after only doing so once in the first six games of the season.
Marist will play their third straight game at home in December as they take on non-conference opponent Albany on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 P.M. The Red Foxes are 2-1 all-time against the Great Danes. Tickets are still available at the box office or on goredfoxes.com.
