WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Marist women's basketball team (17-5, 11-1 MAAC) defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) newcomer, Monmouth (6-17, 5-7 MAAC) on Saturday, 65-40. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 11-1 in conference play and 17-5 overall. During today's game, senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark, becoming only the 20th player in program history to do so. Ockenden finished with 14 points. Senior Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) posted 14 points seven boards, and four assists. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) had 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Redshirt junior Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had seven points and an additional seven rebounds while sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) contributed eight points and four rebounds. Marist had a season-high 51 rebounds.
Marist opened up the game on a 10-0 run, fueled by points from four different Red Foxes. Monmouth's Helena Kurt put the Hawks on the board, sinking a three at the 16:04 mark. Blais responded with a three, followed by a layup from Kurt to make it 15-5 with 14:52 to play. Each team posted eight points over the following seven minutes to make it 23-13 in favor of Marist with 7:16 to go. Five points from Blais, four from Coffey, and two from each Ockenden and Jarosz sealed the deal for Marist as the Red Foxes closed the half on a 13-4 run to lead 36-17 at the midway point.
Monmouth came out strong in the second half, going on a 14-8 run to pull within 13 at the 11:07 mark, the closest the Hawks would get to gaining the lead in the second half. Marist exploded over the following seven minutes, posting a 19-5 run to take a 24 point lead with 3:55 to play. The Hawks scored four points to Marist's two to close the game as the Red Foxes defeated Monmouth in the first meeting between the two teams since 1997, 65-40.
The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 at Siena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
