HAMDEN, Conn. - The Marist men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Monday, as the Red Foxes suffered an 83-78 defeat at Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest.
Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) finished with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists against just one turnover in 39 minutes. Hart shot 8-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point range. Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) had his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) tallied 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. The Red Foxes shot 12-for-22 (.545) from three-point range, and had 16 assists against just eight turnovers.
Quinnipiac's Umar Shannon led all scorers with 26. Ousmane Drame had 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks for the Bobcats.
The contest features several significant runs early on. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 25-10 lead at the 11:34 mark of the first half thanks to a 20-6 spurt. However, the Bobcats answered that with an 18-2 run of their own to take the lead, as Marist went scoreless for a stretch of nearly five-and-a-half minutes. However, the Red Foxes fought back and the game was tied at 40 entering halftime.
Quinnipiac scored the first six points of the second half, but Marist answered by scoring the next 12 to take a six-point lead. The Red Foxes led by as much as eight in the second half, but Quinnpiac chipped away, and Umar Shannon's layup with 6:01 to play gave the Bobcats the lead for good. Shannon had 12 consecutive points for Quinnipiac between the 6:01 and 2:17 marks, which included two three-pointers.
Marist fell to 9-15 overall and 6-8 in the MAAC. Quinnipiac is now 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the MAAC.
Marist returns to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes host Siena at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m., and the contest will air on ESPN3. The game is part of a split doubleheader with the Marist women's team, which will host Quinnipiac at 5 p.m. Separate admission is required for both games.
