Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – The Marist baseball team suffered a 5-3 loss at Longwood in a non-conference game Friday evening.
Although the Lancers outhit the Red Foxes 10-8, seven of the Red Foxes' nine starters had at least one hit. Freshman center fielder Jamari Moore (Marietta, Ga.) led the way offensively for Marist by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. The Red Foxes were 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts, as senior designated hitter Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) had two, and senior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) had one.
Senior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) started and took the loss for Marist, as he fell to 0-2. Eich allowed five runs in 5.1 innings, but just one was earned. He recorded four strikeouts. Junior right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, and allowed just one hit while striking out one.
Marist scored in its initial at-bat as Moore led off with a single, stole second with one out, and scored from there on a single by junior first baseman Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.). Longwood answered with four runs in the first. The Lancers batted around, and scored three runs with two outs. None of the runs in the inning were earned.
Marist answered with two runs in the second. Passerelle led off with a single, stole second and third with one out, and came home on a single by senior right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.), who eventually came home on a bunt by freshman second baseman Ben Moller (Warrington, Pa.). Longwood added a run in the sixth, and the last 12 Red Foxes were retired in order.
Longwood's Mitchell Kuebbing (1-0) earned the win with five innings of scoreless relief. Travis Burnette retired the final six Red Foxes to get his second save. Catcher Mac McCafferty had a two-run single in the Lancers' four-run first.
Marist fell to 1-4; Longwood improved to 2-3.
Marist and Longwood continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. The teams will wrap up the set with a single game on Sunday.
