Marist Baseball Swept In Doubleheader at Longwood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Marist baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Longwood on Saturday. The Red Foxes suffered a 16-4 defeat in game one, and a 3-2 loss in game two.

The Red Foxes were paced offensively by sophomore outfielders Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) and Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.). Pagano went 5-for-8 with two RBIs on the day, while McIntire was 4-for-7 with three runs scored, an RBI and a home run. Both had two multi-hit games.

Game One

Trailing 2-0 after four, Marist tied the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Pagano. In the sixth, a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Ben Moller (Warrington, Pa.) brought home senior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) to give Marist a 3-2 lead. The Red Foxes tacked on another run in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by junior first baseman Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.), which brought in freshman center fielder Jamari Moore (Marietta, Ga.).

Longwood took the lead with three runs in the seventh, and put it out of reach with 11 in the eighth. Center fielder Brandon Delk paced the Lancers' attack by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored, which included a grand slam in the eighth.

Luke Simpson (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win for Longwood. Freshman right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) took the loss. Marist starter Rich Vrana (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) gave up just one earned run in six innings and struck out six.

Game Two

Marist struck first in the first on an RBI single by McQuail, which brought home McIntire. Longwood took the lead with two in the fifth, but Marist tied the game in the eighth on a leadoff homer by McIntire.

However, Longwood took the lead for good in its half of the eighth on a one-out single by left fielder Kyri Washington. Ninth-inning singles by McIntire and Pagano put the go-ahead run on base with two outs in the ninth, but the Red Foxes were unable to score.

Longwood starter Allen Ellis (1-0) went the first eight for the win, and Travis Burnette pitched the ninth for his third save. Junior right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) took the loss for Marist, and is 0-1. Junior right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) went the first seven innings, and allowed just three hits with six strikeouts. Davis induced 12 ground-ball outs.

Marist fell to 1-6; Longwood improved to 4-3. The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
